His career began with the Bears as a player (1952-55, 57, 59-62), offensive coach (1963-65), defensive coach (1966-1967), head coach (1968-1971), and in 1981 he began supervising Research & Quality Control... Dooley studied and evaluated all players and teams in the league and his reports were used in the development of the Bears' weekly game plan.Dooley played nine seasons for the Bears and is the club's sixth all-times leading receiver. His playing days were interrupted twice: when he served the Air Force in 1955-56 and in '58 when he was sidelined with a broken ankle.
